Latin-American immigration to Spain during the last twenty years

This thesis refers to Latin-American immigration to Spain during the last twenty years (1990 - 2010). This thesis is divided in two main parts. The first part is devoted to a general overview and also to the most important aspects related to the emigration of Latin Americans into Spain. The individual chapters are focused on the following topics: discussion and development of research of immigration in Spain, the roots of Latin American emigration, Spain as the destination of emigrants, migration policy of Spain, the composition of the Latin American population living in Spain, the integration of Latin American immigrants in Spanish labour market and Latin American gangs in Spain. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to a research focusing on the coexistence of Spanish and Latin Americans in the Iberian Peninsula. Based on the survey the following aspects are examined: the reasons of Latin Americans leading to emigration to Spain, experience of Latin American emigrants with attitude of Spanish people towards them, attitude of Spanish towards immigrants and last but not least the integration of Latin American immigrants into the Spanish society. PhDr. Jiří Hnilica, Ph.D. The bachelor thesis deals with life in refugee camps in Bavaria after the Second World War. To this end, the bachelor thesis asks several questions, including: "What was the situation in Central Europe, especially in Czechoslovakia and Germany between 1945 and 1955?", "For what reasons did people leave or flee Czechoslovakia?" and "What were their beginnings in the refugee camps? What was life like there?" The topic of escapes and emigration from Czechoslovakia is related to the post-war situation in both Czechoslovakia and Germany in the years 1945-1955 and it shows the complexity of the period in both countries. Czechoslovakia was slowly coming under the rule of the Communist Party, Germany lay in ruins and was initially divided between the four victorious powers: the USA, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and France. Immediately after the war, Sudeten Germans were expelled from Czechoslovakia and subsequently displaced finding a place to stay in a destroyed Germany, primarily in Bavaria. Bus stop

The project is dedicated to the phenomenon of public transport stops, which should serve as a metaphor for emigration and the waiting person. The study of this topic helps to understand the issues of mutual understanding that arise in the process of intercultural interaction. The project is aimed at analyzing the various stages of the transformation of a person's personality during emigration, primarily in relation to the process of waiting and expectation. At the same time, the poetics of stopping was used, as well as it physical experience. Fabric plays an important role in the project. My intention was to portray a person waiting, with whom it would be possible to shorten the distance, in some way even identify. The cocoon itself, with a slight presence of a human figure, carries a hidden beauty that human life involuntarily puts into it. The final installation is located in a public space, at bus stops, where the presence of an art object creates an atmosphere on the verge of staged and authentic reality. As a result, the project is about the beauty of peace, and at the same time about the tension of expectation.

Bosnian diaspora through the eyes of Sarajevans - perceptions of emigration and stereotypes

The master's thesis entitled "Bosnian diaspora through the eyes of Sarajevans - perceptions of emigration and stereotypes" brings a closer view of the Bosnian diaspora and public opinion about it from the perspective of Sarajevans. It represents a socio-psychological qualitative research based on the analysis of 18 semi-structured interviews with the inhabitants of Sarajevo. Using existing theoretical concepts, the primary goal is to explore and list the most widespread stereotypes about the Bosnian diaspora, regardless of whether they are war refugees or economic emigrants. The thesis also represents an attempt to identify the main reasons for their existence and maintenance and looks for possible proposals for their elimination. Whether the departure is legitimate in the eyes of Sarajevans, whether the diaspora lives better, how it was affected by life in the "West" and to what extent Sarajevans are aware of the diaspora's potential and benefits for Bosnia and Herzegovina are some of the questions this thesis seeks to answer. The political and ethnic dimension of the diaspora is not the subject of research, as cultural stereotypes about the Bosnian diaspora do not distinguish between different ethnicities. Adaptation of Chernobyl Czechs in Czech environment

This bachelor thesis deals with the adaptation of the second generation of Chernobyl Czechs who re-migrated to the Czech territory between 1991 and 1993 from the territory of today's Ukraine. The primary aim is to find out how they perceive the process of their own adaptation, how they think about their own national identity and how is their identity specific. The theoretical part describes the historical context of Czechs in Ukraine and their re- migration back to their homeland. The methodological part explains the use of semi- structured interviews as a research method, and I also present the chosen method of qualitative analysis and the ethical aspect of the research. In the empirical section, I then present the codes and categories developed during the analysis. The themes that emerge from the data analysis are divided into four categories: perceptions of life in the Czech Republic, personality traits, elements of everyday life, and social ties. Through these categories, I present the resettled people's perception of the process of adaptation, integration into society and their own national identity. In the final part of the thesis, I discuss the findings in relation to the research questions. I try to relate the findings to the theoretical model of adaptation strategies developed by John W. Berry.

Two Yugoslavias: One Lost, the Other Dremt of. War and Disintegration of the Yugoslav Federation from the Perspective of the Yugoslav Emigrant Community in the Czech Republic

The thesis deals with the reflection of the war conflict and the subsequent disintegration of Yugoslavia in the first half of the 1990s from the perspective of representatives of various ethnic and religious groups from the countries of this former federation, who found a new home in the Czech Republic. The aim of the work is to capture their recollection and perception of the causes and consequences of this historical event through oral history, in accordance with the post-positivist paradigm following the cultural turnover in the 1980s. Based on the analysis and interpretation of oral history interviews, I will attempt to interpret the intrusion into the historical subjectivity of these narrators. I will also be interested in the question of their post- conflict identity and their attitude towards the disintegration of Yugoslavia and towards post- war trans-nationalism. The narrators are ex-Yugoslavs who were born in the 1960s and 1970s in former Yugoslavia on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the Civil war (1992- 1995) were already adults and they emigrated during the war or immediately after that. The Story of Czech Immigrants in USA and their Legacy from the End of the 19th Century to Present: The Identity and Everyday Life of a Small Town in Minnesota

The aim of this thesis is to describe the fates, sorrows and joys of Czech peasants (and their descendants) who decided to emigrate to the USA between the second half of the 19th century and the First World War, where they left a legacy that persists to these days. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the general history and knowledge of the emigration of Czechs to the USA, its causes and course. Using collected letters, pamphlets and archival records, it then attempts to reconstruct the journeys of emigrants from Bohemia to their new home across the ocean. The work then describes the various problems that the compatriots had to deal with immediately after landing in the United States, on their way to find available land or to build their homes. The thesis also depicts the efforts to create expatriate communities and societies along with the traditions that Czech immigrants brought with them. The second part focuses on a specific town in Minnesota, but also mentions nearby settlements and towns whose names attest to the Czech origins of their founders. The work focuses on the history of New Prague and its surroundings, associations and traditions that are connected to Czech cultural heritage and still play an important role in maintaining the Czech-American identity of the local population. With the help of the informations from local residents, the thesis seeks to capture and then analyse their perception of their Czech origins and their efforts to maintain awareness of Czech culture and language. Finally, the thesis will focus on specific events and festivals in and around New Prague that serve as evidence of the continuing awareness of Czech culture among Americans.

Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping in memory of Czechoslovak sailors (1959-1989)

The main target of the work is to extend our current knowledge concerning history of the Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping company during the period from the company's founding in 1959 until year 1989. The main basis for this task fulfillment there are interviews with former Czechoslovak sailors realized with help of the oral history method. Beside this, the paper is supported also by archive materials. The text reflects certain specificity of the topic (maritime business running in the inland country, in addition country ruled by non-democratic regime) and it aims to the company's history; but its main part is concentrated on the sailors' living conditions. It processes direct testimonies about sailors' life and work on Czechoslovak ships; there are included topics as travelling, emigration, direct experience with communist regime on ships, private life of sailors, and their father and husband role. The author does not propose definite conclusions; her effort is aimed to see the topic from various points of view. Sailors are not portrayed as exceptional people but as men whose meaning of life was work on the sea. And this fact principally influenced their lives as well as lives of their families.

Czechs and Slovaks in the country of helvetian cross: czechoslovak expatriate clubs in Switzerland in the second half of the 20th century

This thesis deals with the development and activities of compatriot organizations of Czechs and Slovaks in the 20th century that were associated in the Union of clubs of Czechs and Slovaks in Switzerland. The first clubs, which did not last long, were established in the 1860s. The origins of more stable organizations date back to the beginning of the twentieth century, when clubs such as Czechoslovak Beseda Slovan in Geneva and Czechoslovak Beseda Svatopluk Čech in Zurich were established. These organizations expanded after the big emigrant wave caused by the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. This period between the years 1968 and 1990 is the main objective of the following research. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first one introduces some basic notions needed for the thesis and puts the existence of compatriot clubs in Switzerland in a broader context. At the same time, it deals with the most important emigrant waves from Czechoslovakia with emphasis on those emigrants that left for Switzerland.
